Background of the Study

The dynamic nature of the modern job market has increasingly necessitated continuous learning and career adaptability. In Ilorin East Local Government Area, adult education programs have emerged as vital instruments for facilitating career switching among professionals seeking to enhance their skill sets and remain competitive. Rapid technological advancements, coupled with evolving economic demands, have made it imperative for professionals to acquire new competencies and transition into emerging sectors (Adewale, 2023). Adult education, in this context, offers not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills that are critical for career advancement and professional reinvention. Programs that focus on vocational training, digital literacy, and soft skills development have been particularly instrumental in enabling career transitions. However, the effectiveness of these programs is influenced by several factors, including the relevance of the curriculum, the quality of instruction, and the support services provided to learners. In Ilorin East, professionals are increasingly turning to adult education as a means to pivot their careers, whether due to job displacement, technological disruption, or personal aspirations for growth. Despite the growing interest, challenges such as time constraints, financial limitations, and resistance to change often impede the successful adoption of new skills (Ogunleye, 2024). Furthermore, the traditional mindset of many established professionals poses additional hurdles in embracing lifelong learning as a norm. Contemporary studies indicate that adult education can play a transformative role in redefining career trajectories and enhancing job satisfaction, provided that the programs are well-designed and contextually relevant (Babatunde, 2025). The integration of online learning platforms and flexible schedules has further contributed to the accessibility and appeal of adult education among busy professionals. This study seeks to explore the extent to which adult education facilitates career switching in Ilorin East, examining the underlying factors that contribute to its success as well as the barriers that hinder its effectiveness. By delving into these issues, the research aims to provide a nuanced understanding of how adult education can serve as a catalyst for professional reinvention and economic mobility, ultimately contributing to a more adaptive and resilient workforce (Adewale, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of adult education to enable career switching among professionals, many in Ilorin East encounter significant obstacles in leveraging these opportunities. Rapid technological changes and shifting market demands necessitate continual skills upgrading; however, professionals often face challenges in balancing work, personal commitments, and further education. Limited time, high tuition costs, and inadequate institutional support frequently impede the ability of professionals to engage in continuous learning (Ogunleye, 2024). Additionally, the content of many adult education programs does not always align with the specific needs of career switchers, leading to a gap between acquired knowledge and practical job requirements. This disconnect undermines the effectiveness of educational programs designed to facilitate career transitions. Moreover, there is a pervasive cultural reluctance among some professionals to abandon established career paths in favor of new opportunities, resulting in resistance to change and lower enrollment in adult education courses. Institutional challenges, including outdated curricula and insufficient career counseling services, further compound these issues. The lack of clear evidence on the direct impact of adult education on successful career switching adds to the uncertainty, making it difficult for stakeholders to gauge the return on investment in these programs. Consequently, professionals may be hesitant to commit to further education, perpetuating a cycle of stagnation and limiting the potential for economic and professional growth. This study, therefore, aims to identify and analyze the factors that affect the effectiveness of adult education in facilitating career switching among professionals in Ilorin East. By addressing these challenges, the research intends to propose practical solutions that can enhance the alignment between educational offerings and market needs, thereby promoting a more agile and competitive workforce (Babatunde, 2025).
